JC/BS... worth the grind?

Postby mts on Mon Mar 08, 2010 8:22 pm

trying to understand the benefit of this combo.... so i'll compare BS and JC with mining....

regular epic "solid" gem gives +30 stamina. BS gives two extra sockets and thus have an additional +60 stamina.

JC have special JC-only gems. the solid version grants 51 stamina. since you are limited to 3 JC-only gems at once... you get 3x21 which is an additional +63 stamina.

a miner gets a +60 stam bonus at 450 skill.

why go through the difficulty/expense of grinding out JC/BS if you don't actually net much more than 3 stamina? not to mention the expense of grinding out the two professions.

is there any reason other than versatility? (you can socket something other than stam with JC/BS.)

I would guess JC/BS is more a min/max thing then anything else. I'm sure on a spreadsheet somewhere there is a clearly defined reasoning behind why these 2 professions combined are the best when compared to any other combination of professions. The question you have to ask yourself is if that 1% or 2% difference between not having those 2 profession and having them is what is holding your character back from greatness or not? In the case of some people, it might be, but in the case of you Mr. cat&bear talents I doubt it.

Personally, I think that JC/BS was more effective back when the JC-only gems were Prismatic and could be used to help force socket bonuses.

But Tanner can answer your questions from experience.

For gearing, its only about min maxing. As a warrior (dps) you would gain an extra 42 arp (34*3=102)(102-60=42) from the jc only gems. Through BS you would gain an additional socket in both your bracers and gloves which would yield an additional 40 arp.

For gold, you're kind of behind the game now with the changes coming but I've made roughly 110k from jewel crafting and black-smithing. I'm sure you can still make some gold by buying up uncut gems, cutting them to the flavor of the month and auction house listing them. You should know that Doomhammer alliance has about 25 professional jewel crafting auction house mongrels. I found that that work out weighed the gain there for this method of revenue.

As for the spread sheet that Morgan refers to; Landsoul is second to none. He's even had gear named after him in ICC. But if you're not serious about dps warriors, I wouldn't bother. This is a whole new level of Warcraft.

raiding as an arms warrior these days, and as tanner says, the extra armor penetration is worth it. I personally am BS/eng, though... eng just because of conveinice (nitro boosters, jeeves, warps, fun hand rocket +heroic throw macros), etc

hijacking my own thread....

speaking of armor penetration... what percentage is needed before you are over some magic threshold when ArP becomes "worth it"? gemming as just a blacksmith, not a JC, i can only get up to around 38%. it seems that i would have been better off getting plain old strength gems instead.

Nope! But you should continue to do it slowly as you have mats before the xpac hits. Mats will sky rocket post release.

in pvp they're great!! because you simply don't have very many ranged attacks it's fun to be able to cause some big dmg from far away (especially like on offensive wg and stuff like that)

engineering has lots of pvp-ish things. i had made the decision to consider wow a pve-only game a while ago, hehe.

guess the break down is handrocket for pvp and hyperspeed for pve.

I'm finding it a lot of fun using the parachute cloak thing in AB. Jumping off LM to BS and stealthing in.
It's not that I don't know.
It's that I just don't care.

Yeah one would think it would break resulting in a deadly plummet back to Azeroth.
